  1. Design an experiment to test different brands of makeup. What are some of the variables that you might consider? How would you determine effectiveness?
  2. Most makeup is based on standardizing beauty—making certain qualities more similar to those of people you see on TV and in magazines. Do you think cosmetics scientists have any responsibility when people are made to feel bad about their appearance?
  3. Why do you think the Roman face cream lasted so long while many other artifacts of daily life were lost?
  4. Are cosmetics scientists more likely to be women or men? Why? Do you think that use of and interest in a product would affect who works at a company that makes the product?
  5. Some people argue that the only way to be sure of the safety of cosmetics ingredients is to test them on laboratory animals. Do you agree or disagree?
